I feel like if Clint weren’t a silver age creation, that would have been his background exactly. I mean, given his background as it was, it’s not a reach. It’s one of the few things I really like about Ult!Clint.

Me too. There were a few things about Ultimate!Clint that were solid, and his criminal background was one of them. I agree, if he hadn’t been created in the sixties, a modern origin would have seen him landed in one of the supervillian prisons, due to his abilities.

And then Phil. On one of his first missions for SHIELD. Recruiting a dangerous wildcard criminal. And convincing him that this is the only chance he has to turn his life around, to avoid ending up like his brother. And Clint laughs at him, and shows off, and figures, hell. It’s three squares and a bed, right? And he’ll have a bow back in his hands, so it can’t be that bad.

But in his first week? Man, everything goes wrong. He screws up at every turn, he’s unpredictable, jumpy. He can’t follow orders, and everything sets him off. Then he gets to thinking…fuck. This is it. They’re gonna send me back. Well done, Barton, you’ve managed to screw up the last damn chance anyone is ever gonna give you. You coulda been someone, you coulda been worth something, now all you’re gonna be worth is a couple of packets of cigarettes.

And all it takes is one short, hard slap from Phil to snap him out of it. Things get better from there. he finds his place, finds his niche, and realises that it’s okay to rely on someone, that Phil is always there to back him up if the ground beneath his feet starts to get a little unsteady. And then one day he gets the chance to pay it all back, to see someone in a shitty situation, throwing her life away. So he gives her a chance to be someone else, to pick herself up out of the gutter, and be a part of his family.

AND THAT’S THE STORY OF HOW CLINT BARTON WENT FROM BEING A THROWAWAY ORPHAN TO BEING A MAN WITH A FAMILY OF HIS OWN CHOOSING OH FOR FUCK’S SAKE DID I ACTUALLY JUST TYPE ALL OF THAT? GODDAMNIT MOVIE!CLINT FEELS.
