Ignore the internet. Ignore The Big Bang Theory, and ignore every other show that’s supposed to represent ‘Nerd Culture’*
Ignore every horror store you have heard about new nerds being chased out of comic stores with flaming torches and copies of the comic book price guide.
Yes, some of those stories are true, but here is the thing. If you walk into a clothing store for the first time - there is a chance you will have a bad experience. Same with a Sporting goods store. A Gaming store. Any kind of store. The only difference with Comic Book stores is that, because of the popular influence of shows like The Big Bang Theory, these stores have garnered a mostly false reputation for being a hostile environment for fledgling nerds, newbs, and most of all, women.
Yes, sometimes these horror stories are true. But they’re also a relic of the past. The attitude of the comic book community is changing - just look at the outrage caused by the hiring of Orson Scott Card, whose Homophobia would have been happily overlooked just a few years ago. These horrible, judgmental stories keeping fans out of comic book stories are a thing of the past, and they’re getting increasingly rarer.
More than that, these are businesses that want to make money! You know what makes me HAPPIEST at work? When someone comes in and says to me ‘I have NEVER been into a comic book store before, I saw the movies and liked them, and I want to know more!’
That makes me happy because there are more people to support the books I love, more people to talk comics with, and more people entering the community that I have devoted my life to. But more than that? IT MEANS I CAN SELL A LOT OF BOOKS AND MAKE MY BOSS REALLY HAPPY. So be honest! Walk into that store and say HEY. I AM NEW AND I WANT TO THROW MONEY AT YOU. SUGGEST SOME BOOKS FOR ME!
Anyone that would ridicule you for that is a fucking idiot, not worth your time, and doesn’t know how to run a business.

I had about a dozen people ask/commission me for a Kate Bishop/Hawkeye ornament this year. They literally take about 5 minutes each to draw, so I’m not charging anyone for this. Happy Holidays, Hawkbutts!

I have to say, I’m pretty happy with this. I know there were a lot of people out there screaming for blood and demanding his resignation, and I understand that. But for me, this is good enough.
I want this community, this female, gay, nerd community to be a forgiving one. Gunn’s claims of being an outspoken supporter of gay and minority rights are true, which is why the post was, for me, so shocking. I know there will be a lot of you out there that aren’t satisfied with this, but I can live with it. The original post made me feel sick and more than a little victimized, but the steps taken in the wake of this outrage have been very satisfactory, in my opinion.
What’s more, we did this! It was the tumblr outrage that sparked this change and this result, and it just goes to show that not only are the loud voices of angry female nerds starting to be heard, but we’re being heard very quickly indeed :)

YOU HAVE COME IN AT THE RIGHT TIME! Hawkeye’s solo title is currently three books in, the third coming out this week! I would say it’s quite close to the movie Clint you’re used to, in terms of sass-levels and smartassery.
If you can’t find the single issues in stores (they’re selling quick!), you can find them here on ComiXology!
More than that, I would recommend picking up Hawkeye: Blindspot, which is now out in a collected trade. It delves a lot into Clint’s backstory and history, while at the same time showing (imo) the most interesting part of him - that he’s a regular joe fighting alongside superhumans.
After that, look into Marvel Now! The re-tooling of the majority of Marvel’s books launched last week, so you’re here just in time to start on brand new books, new story arcs, new creative teams, new everything! I would recommend the new Incredible Hulk series, the new Deadpool series, Uncanny Avengers, and the new Secret Avengers which will feature Coulson, Clint, Natasha, Hulk, and a whole swag of others.
Aside from all of that, I will give you the same advice I give everyone: Find a character you love, and stick to them like glue! You like Hawkeye? Read books about Hawkeye! See him on the cover of something? Pick it up! You might be confused at first, but at least you will know one character. I’m currently doing that with Guardians of the Galaxy, and although it’s confusing at first, Rocket Raccoon is getting me through.

I love my comic book store.
I love it to pieces. I have never been to a more welcoming, enjoyable, inclusive, fun place in my life. I’ve seen people of every creed, color, gender and sexuality in there. Gorgeous transgender men and women. Gay men. Gay women. Everything in between. A fantastic, devoted following of autistic kids that love to come in and raid the 25c boxes. People that have been reading and collecting for years, and people that come in the day after seeing a comic book movie, and want to learn more.
Those are the people that make me happiest of all. :)
The first comic book store I went to here was terrible. The owner was rude, dismissive, and insulting. I never wanted to go back into another one. But I love this medium, I passionately love the characters, and I wanted more. So I didn’t let one bad experience change my mind. And I found paradise. I’m not kidding when I say my comic store is my second home. When I’m not working there, I’m hanging out there. Hell, I worked there two hours tonight for free when I was supposed to be on a date with my woman, because it makes me so happy.
I don’t like old comics. I don’t really give a shit that Batman Number Etc is worth X amount of dollars. But if someone does, more power to them! And I love to listen to people passionately tell me how much THEY love it. The history. The weight that comes with these characters.
I’ve talked to a handful of people today that made me want to write this post. I know I have a lot of lovely followers that have never picked up a comic book. As someone who buys weekly single issues, and has done for a long time, I certainly don’t judge you for this. I know how intimidating it is. But I implore you - if you love these characters as much as I do, give it a try. If you are close to Asheville NC, drop in and I will personally take you to pick out a book. PERSONALLY. AND I WILL DRAW YOU SOMETHING AND TAKE YOU OUT TO LUNCH AND PAT YOU ON THE HEAD AS WELL!
I just…god. God. The pleasure that I get from comic books is like a drug. The books, the shows, the movies, the toys, the fans, the fandom, EVERYTHING. And if you feel intimidated, please don’t be afraid. I know not everyone is lucky enough to have a store like mine, but they ARE out there! A lovely store where you can scream in unison about awful costumes, shit treatment of women. A store where the owner not only ships the male characters, but THE MALE CUSTOMERS.
Sorry for the sudden unexpected outburst of feels, but sitting in my beloved store, re-ordering single issues (Damn you people love aquaman o.O) on a silent saturday night, surrounded by so much incredible art and stories and HISTORY I just…ugh. I have to share it.
