I screwed up and got called on it and the posters are right, right, right and I was wrong, wrong, wrong.
In a post about Tremor, a Bengali heroine I created that sadly hasn’t been seen since the new 52, I said that she was ‘asexual by choice.’
She’s a character whose backstory is written, but hasn’t been shown yet. I love her dearly, she’s a great character, but using that phrase is clearly using oppressive language.
Posters have correctly pointed out that asexuality is an orientation, not a ‘choice,’ and they are absolutely right, just sheer thoughtless language on my part. My apologies to everyone, it won’t happen again, and when Tremor returns, we’ll deal with that head on. She’s a terrific character and the comments here will only make her better. So, you have my thanks. Once again, I owe Tumblr for some extra and much-needed awareness.
Simply put, I screwed up.
And Gail Simone continues to be an example of how all popular writers in charge of delicate subjects should act. Pay attention, people.
Author’s Summary: This is a story about Phil Coulson and how he became the man he is today but, mostly, this is a story about Phil Coulson’s mother.
Notes: A quiet, perfect mood for a quiet, perfect man and his family. Relationships in this are little more than afterthought, but that’s precisely why it works; because this is about family and becoming, and those are things Phil Coulson understands.
I see a lot of debate and off-topic asks concerning this post, but the fact is, she’s right. She’s so right. I adore and support Gail Simone in almost anything, whether or not I always agree with her opinions. The fact is, anyone can talk shit. Anyone can sit and stew and bitch. And most of the time, that’s all they want to do. To sit and complain and other people agree with them.
So do it yourself. Make your own comics. That’s what my girlfriend and I are currently doing, and it’s making us happier than anything has in a long time. And we’re doing it for ourselves. We’re not setting out to work for the Big Two, or any indy company. We’re not trying to be the next Brubaker, or Snyder, or even Simone (Well…maybe a little on the last one…). We’re just having fun.
You know what’s more fun than sitting and bitching about things, just to hear the sound of my own voice? Writing comic scripts on our own times. Drawing. Having fun. Being productive.
Not everyone is an artist. Not everyone is a writer. If you are one but not the other - get out there. Go to your LCS. Find the people you need, and work on it. Play to your strengths, and add them to the strengths of others.
'Make your own, then' can be a loaded phrase, but in THIS fandom and community, and on THIS social networking site, more people need to take it to heart. As Gail said, look at Kate Beaton. Look at Gingerhaze. Make what you love, and get it out there. Make yourself happy, instead of cementing in the negative opinions of others.
Be a part of the next generation. Make it better. Don’t just dwell on the bad, even though that’s the easier route.
